What is Liquid Melatonin and What Does It Do?

It seems like a majority of people I know have sleep problems of one kind or another. Whether it’s trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or sleeping soundly, people are increasingly looking for assistance in managing their sleep problems. Among the most popular of natural or at home remedies for sleep problems is using liquid melatonin.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by our body to help regulate our sleep cycles. Natural melatonin production gradually decreases with age, which is one reason a lot of adults have problems sleeping. This is where taking a melatonin supplement can help a person to get back onto a good sleep schedule and even sleep better once asleep.

In addition to regular cases of insomnia, some of the other reasons a person would take a liquid melatonin supplement may include to combat jet lag, treating seasonal affective disorder or managing sleep patterns when working the night shift. Light exposure plays a role in our body’s production of this important hormone, so during times of decreased exposure to light people may experience a shift in their natural melatonin production, thus altering their sleep patterns. This is why melatonin may be helpful for those working at night, living in places with low levels of sunlight during certain times of year or those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder.

If you’re someone who deals with constant sleep problems, then you may want to consider taking a liquid melatonin supplement every day. According to Helene Emsellem, M.D., clinical professor of neurology at George Washington University Medical Center, “Melatonin is a hormone that the body produces when it's time for sleep, regulating your circadian rhythm. It can help a night owl who's usually up until 2 a.m. change her cycle so she dozes off by midnight. The key is taking a very low dosage, such as 200 micrograms, several hours before your desired bedtime for a month or two--it takes a while to reinforce the change in the body clock.”

Conversely, for someone having trouble sleeping because of jet lag or some other irregular situation, Emsellem suggests, “For the occasional bout of insomnia, on the other hand, you need to take higher doses of melatonin, such as 3 milligrams, closer to bedtime to help transition into sleep.” Liquid Health’s Sleep Well supplement contains 3mg of liquid melatonin per dose and is ideal for those looking for a natural sleep aid.

Melatonin supplements should only be taken when you’re preparing to go to sleep and should not be used by children, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Melatonin may interfere with some prescription medications so, as always consult your physician with any questions or concerns before adding a melatonin supplement to your bedtime routine.
