The Inner Workings of Huperzine-A
If you’ve ever scrutinized the ingredients of Liquid Health’s NeuroLogic supplement, you may have noticed the “Alertness and Mental Clarity Blend” that makes up 410mg of each serving. This blend comprises several ingredients that are likely foreign to you because of their relative obscurity. Today we’ll look at one ingredient in this blend: “Huperzine-A.”
Huperzine-A (sometimes called selagine) is a substance derived and purified from the Chinese Club Moss (Huperzia serrata). Huperzine-A is promoted as a memory-enhancer and is often used to treat Alzheimer’s Disease. But what does huperzine-A do in the body? The answer is quite technical.
Firstly, we’ll learn or relearn some biological terminology. Enzymes are substances that make it easier for chemical reactions to occur in living organisms. The enzymes in the human body are essential. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that relays signals between our nerve cells and are thus vital to our nervous system.
Now that we understand those two terms, we can better understand the basics of a process that involves both of them. A specialized enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE) aids the reaction that breaks down the neurotransmitter called acetylcholine (ACh). This breakdown of ACh is an important function for reasons that would be tedious to discuss here, but low levels of the neurotransmitter ACh have been associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other disorders. Huperzine-A serves as an anticholinesterase, a technical term that denotes a substance that prevents the enzyme AChE from doing the job we discussed earlier: breaking down ACh. With huperzine-A inhibiting AChE, ACh levels in the body increase. Huperzine-A has evidently improved the memory and behavior of people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in a few studies, and experiments and studies are being done to better understand its effectiveness. Huperzine-A is only one of many beneficial substances in Liquid Health's new Neurologic brain health supplement.
