Important Ingredients to Look for in a Women's Multivitamin

When you're looking for a multiple vitamin to take sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between all the different products that are available. However, if you're a woman there are some specific, essential, ingredients to look for that can generally be found in a specific women's multi vitamin product.

Calcium – Everyone knows that Calcium is very important to maintaining healthy bones. As women get older they start to suffer from bone loss, especially during and after menopause. For this reason it's especially important that women get enough calcium. The Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies has recommended women over the age of 50 get 1200 mg/day of Calcium.

Iron – “The major reason we need it (iron) is that it helps to transport oxygen throughout the body,” says Paul Thomas, EdD, RD, a scientific consultant to the National Institutes of Health, Office of Dietary Supplements. Women, especially those who menstruate, run the risk of being anemic, making iron another ingredient to look for in your women's multi supplement.

Folic Acid – According to womenshealth.gov, “Most women do not get all the folic acid they need through food alone.” Folic acid is needed by the body to keep your blood healthy, generate new cells and also to prevent birth defects. Folic acid is especially important for pregnant women.

Vitamin D – One of the biggest reasons to look for Vitamin D in your women's multi vitamin supplement is “Vitamin D helps ensure that the body absorbs and retains calcium and phosphorus, both critical for building bone,” according to the Harvard School of Public Health, “Laboratory studies show that vitamin D can reduce cancer cell growth, can increase muscle strength and reduce falls in older people, and plays a critical role in controlling infections. Many of the body’s organs and tissues have receptors for vitamin D, and scientists are still teasing out its other possible functions.”
