Addressing ADHD Naturally

Over the past few years, natural or alternative therapies for ADHD have grown in popularity. The symptoms of ADHD are generally categorized into 3 categories: Predominantly inattentive, Predominantly hyperactive and/or impulsive, Combination of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. With October being National ADHD Awareness Month, I figured what better time to share some natural ways you may be able to help someone with attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder.

Omega Fatty Acids are a common natural suggestion when it comes to addressing the symptoms related to ADHD. A number of studies have looked at OFAs and their affect on things like hyperactivity and ability to focus. According to WebMD, in one study “a specific supplement of fish oil and evening primrose oil was used. Results showed that it improved hyperactivity, inattentiveness, an inability to think clearly, and overall behavior in children with ADHD who were 7 to 12 years old.”

Another popular choice for trying to naturally help someone with ADHD is Zinc. Studies have shown that children with ADHD may actually have lower levels of Zinc than their peers without ADHD. It naturally makes sense, then, that supplementing with Zinc would benefit children with ADHD. Zinc helps with a number of processes in the body including regulating neurotransmitters and affecting the body’s production of melatonin, which helps a person’s sleep.

Speaking of sleep, according to Healthline, “A 1998 study found that children with ADHD had more problems falling asleep, sleeping soundly, and getting going in the morning. Researchers suggested adjunct therapies might be beneficial.” So finding ways to help your child with ADHD to sleep better may also help improve his or her symptoms. Melatonin, chamomile and lavender are great natural remedies for sleep problems.

Some people have found natural alternatives for ADHD to be a great addition to the protocols suggested by their doctor and some have even been able to avoid long term use of prescription medications. As always, trying options like the few mentioned above should always be done under the direction of a medical professional.
